Director Neill Blomkamp has just announced via his Instagram account that his next film will be a new installment in the ‘Alien’ franchise. Variety has confirmed that 20th Century Fox has closed a deal with the director to make the film, and this is all following Blomkamp having released concept art of his vision for the series back in January. The ‘District 9’ director seems to be a natural fit for the franchise based on his experience with sci-fi and his apparent fandom of the series. The movie is said to be a separate project from the upcoming ‘Prometheus’ sequel also in development at Fox.

The concept art that Blomkamp released via his Instagram account hinted at the return of key characters from the series and appeared to be more in line with the original film and the sequel ‘Aliens’ than the last two entries into the series. The original ‘Alien’ was one of the best mixtures of sci-fi and horror that has ever been made and ‘Aliens’ was a great action oriented movie that still influences other movies and video games today with the ‘Halo’ series of games being one of the biggest properties to heavily draw on the movie’s art style and use of technology. With ‘Prometheus’ seemingly taking the franchise in a different direction, it is rather refreshing to see something happening with the movies that started it all.

Do you think that Blomkamp is the right director to bring the franchise back? Are you excited by the concept art that has been released so far? Let us know in the comments.
