One criticism that I have seen regarding Ash vs Evil Dead is that it uses CGI too often, and while it does use a number of digital effects there are ample practical effects being used as well. In the included video from Starz, the practical effects used by the show are highlighted. It does appear that every attempt is made to use as many practical effects as possible, while recognizing that the time allowed for shooting an episode of a television show doesn’t allow multiple days for shooting and tweaking practical effects to get them just right.
