I love this series. Tales From the Darkside has some great episodes that are thought provoking, and creepy with oppressively dark atmosphere. My all time favorite episode is “Inside the Closet” where a young girl rents a room in a mans house and is terrorized, and eventually brutally murdered by, a monster living in her closet. I was probably about seven or eight when I first saw this episode and it scarred me. I was sleeping over at a friends house and we were watching TV after his parents went to bed when this episode came on. We were absolutely terrified and had to sleep in my friends’ parents room, who were less than thrilled about the whole fiasco. That episode gave me a hard time getting to sleep at night for a long time but was also a major influence on me and catalyzed my obsession with horror and weird fiction.
However there is also a lot of crap in this series. The adaptation of Clive Barkers’ “The Yattering and Jack” is one example of its’ many failures. While the show obviously suffers from budget and time constraints these obstacles can be overcome with proper directing, casting, and scoring. In the yattering episode it appears that everyone just stopped caring. Phil Fondacaro is stuck in some leather pants and has rubber horns glued to his head so as to be passed off as a demon. The Beelzebub appearance is the punchline as a guy appears in the mirror wearing a cheap Halloween costume. A great story by a talented writer is utterly shit on in a quick attempt to capitalize on name recognition. Even at its worst though, Tales From the Darkside is worth watching.
